Kid’s Fishing Day Outdoor Conservation Classes August 17th, 2024

After attending three classes, children may register their names for the large drawing to be held at 3:30 p.m. Children must be present to win. Classes are open to the whole family, but only children may enter the drawing. Sign up for prize drawing at check-in table under the big tent.

7:00 a.m. – Check-in and Info Table, Fish Weighing and First Fish Certificate

Pick up kids’ fishing tags here. Table will be set up for the duration of the event. Kids can have their fish weighed. If your child catches their first fish ever, you can have their photo taken and have a “My First Fish” certificate printed for free. If you catch a lunker, come to the park store for a free Lunker Patch!

9:00 a.m. – Fly Casting, Instructor: David Waugh

Class will be taught at the first hole downstream from the bridge across from the CCC lodge. David is certified from the national FFF (Fly Fishing Federation) as a fly-fishing instructor and is the Manager of Roaring River Concessions. Basic casting techniques will be taught.

9:00 a.m. – Honey, Bee Curious: Instructor: Anna Buckley

Come visit Anna with Buckley’s Bees LLC, ask all your fun and silly honeybee questions. Class with be held under the big tent.

9:00 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Outdoor Crafts and Fishing Activities- Instructor: Barry-Lawrence Regional Library

The Barry-Lawrence Regional Library will have fun hands-on activities and crafts for the kids to enjoy. Meet at the tent between the gazebo and the CCC Lodge.

9:00 a.m. – Family Fishin’ Baits

Come visit Rodney and Natalia under the big tent to get some free bait!

9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. – Master Gardener and 4-H

These activities focus on the joys of being outdoors and how to manage your own gardens. Kids can also see some of the animals and other activities that the 4H chapter been working on. These activities will be located under the big tent.

10:00 a.m- 2 p.m. – Heath Wellness, Instructor: Access Family Care

Access Family Care will have their mobile heath unit down for the whole family to enjoy! They will have a life size Operation game along with other games for the kids to enjoy. They will be also handing out information pamphlets as well. Access Family Care will be located under the big tent.

10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Fly Tying and Fly Casting, Instructors: MAKO Fly Fishing Club.

Fly casting will be in the hole downstream from the bridge across from the CCC Lodge and fly tying will be held under the tent set up near the casting area. Experienced fly tiers will be on hand to conduct fly tying demonstrations. Other members will be teaching various casting techniques to the students.

10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Dutch oven cooking, Instructor: Dr. Larry Quinalty

Dr. Larry Quinalty will be teaching the basics of using a Dutch oven for camp cooking. He will teach what is required to successfully prepare monkey bread, biscuits, peach enchiladas and many other tasty treats. This class will be located under the blue Les Jacobs tent.

10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Critter Stamp Headbands, Instructor: Christie Burkett

Critter stamps will be available for children to make and decorate their own headband. The class will be held under the big tent.

10:00 a.m. – Missouri Mammals, Instructor: Andy Rhodes and Kevin Badgley

Andy and Kevin both works for the Missouri Dept. of Conservation along with being excellent outdoorsmen and educators. Andy and Kevin will discuss and demonstrate the characteristics of mammals found in Missouri. This class will be held under the big tent.

10:00 a.m. – Fish Cleaning, Instructor: Larry Cloud and Rosario Keele

Learn how to clean a trout and prepare it for cooking. The class will be located in front of the hatchery office.

10:00 a.m. – Family Cave Hike – Instructor: Nature Center Staff

This event is a one-mile hike for the whole family. Meet at Devil’s Kitchen Trailhead and bring sturdy footwear.

10:00 a.m. – Stream Team, Instructor: Jeff Cantrell

Jeff works with the Missouri Department of Conservation. He will display macroinvertebrates and discuss the importance of keeping Missouri’s fresh water clean. This class will be held under the big tent.

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Hot Dogs at CCC Lodge.

Roaring River Concessions is providing free hot dogs on Kids’ Fishing Day! Stop by the CCC lodge to get one.

11:00 a.m. – Fish Cooking: Frying Fish, Instructor: Tim Smith

Tim Smith works with the Missouri Dept of Conservation and is an experienced fish cooker and outdoors educator. Tim will demonstrate how to cook trout and other types of fish with the frying method. This class will be held under the tent next to the hatchery office.

11:00 a.m. – Pheasant and Quail Forever, Instructor: Kristen Gundel

This class with focus on two of Missouri’s favorite birds. Learn about the habitats, characteristics, and other fun facts about these game birds. Class will be held under the big tent.

1:00 p.m. – Duck Race

The Shiners of Shell Knob are putting on a duck race for the whole family to enjoy! If you would like to be part of this event, visit The Shriners Tent located next to the big tent.

2:00 p.m. – Fish Cooking: Grilling Fish, Instructor: Tim Smith

Tim Smith works with the Missouri Dept of Conservation and is an experienced fish cooker and outdoors educator. Tim will demonstrate how to cook trout and other types of fish with the grilling method. This class will be held under the tent next to the hatchery office.

2:00 p.m. – Hatchery Tour, Instructor: Nature Center Staff

The tour will meet near the round pools at Roaring River Hatchery. This program will cover Missouri’s 20th largest spring, the history of Roaring River State Park and hatchery, the life cycle of the trout, and how they are raised and stocked into the stream.

3:30 p.m. – Prize Drawing

Held at stage next to the big tent.
Fishing Hours for the day are from 7:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M.
